Car Insurance in 2026: Why Premiums Have Fallen and How to Pay Even Less

📅 July 2026⏱ 8 min read✍️ SmartBudgetUK

Some rare good news on bills: car insurance has been getting cheaper. After the brutal rises of 2022–23, premiums have fallen steadily — the ABI's tracker put the average comprehensive premium at about £560 in early 2026, roughly 11% below the 2024 peak, while price-comparison indices (which measure quotes rather than renewals) sit higher at around £711 but are down some 29% from their late-2023 record. The catch: insurers are warning the falls are stalling as repair costs keep climbing. So 2026 is the year to lock in the savings — here's how.

1. Never auto-renew without shopping around

Rules ban insurers from charging existing customers more than new ones for the same policy, but they don't stop your risk price drifting from the market. Twenty minutes on two comparison sites at renewal remains the single biggest saving in insurance.

2. Buy at the sweet spot — around 3–4 weeks before renewal

Quote prices vary with how far ahead you buy. Buying three to four weeks before your start date is consistently cheaper than leaving it to the last days, when quotes climb sharply. Put a reminder in your calendar a month before renewal.

3. Pay annually if you possibly can

Monthly payment is a loan with interest — often adding meaningful cost across the year. If the lump sum is hard, consider paying by 0% purchase credit card (repaid over the year) rather than the insurer's instalment plan.

4. Tweak your job title honestly

Insurers price occupations differently, and several honest descriptions often fit the same job. Never lie — that invalidates cover — but it's legitimate to compare accurate alternatives.

5. Add a low-risk named driver

Adding an experienced, low-risk named driver (a parent or partner) can reduce the average risk on the policy. Never do the reverse — "fronting" (insuring a young driver's car in a parent's name) is fraud.

6. Rethink your excess

A higher voluntary excess cuts the premium — just keep the total excess at a level you could genuinely pay tomorrow.

7. Consider telematics — not just for teenagers

Black-box and app-based policies have matured, and steady drivers of any age can benefit, especially those with low annual mileage.

8. Get your mileage right

Overstating mileage costs money; understating it risks claims problems. Check last year's MOT certificate for your real annual figure and quote that.

9. Check parking and security details

Driveway vs street, approved alarms and dashcams can all nudge the price. Small percentages, but they stack.

10. Watch the add-ons

Legal cover, courtesy car, key cover and breakdown often get bundled at renewal. Strip out what you don't need — and price breakdown cover separately, where standalone deals are frequently better.

⚠️ Why acting this year matters

Insurers report repair labour costs up around 40% since 2022, with parts and paint rising fast — the industry expects pressure on premiums to return. Savings locked in at 2026's softer prices may look very good in eighteen months.
